This enthusiasm has given a boost to the appeal of “rose cut” diamonds, which first became popular in the mid-16th century. The basic rose cut has a flat base (no pavilion) and a crown composed of symmetrically arranged triangular facets (usually 12 or 24), which rise to form a point.
