THE COLOR OF GOLD

THE COLOR OF GOLD

By: Jeffrey M. Bertman Graduate Gemologist Although some people think that all gold is yellow, gold is often alloyed with other metals to create gold of different colors. For instance, when alloyed with nickel or palladium, gold takes on a white cast. Copper is added to make gold-colored alloys, but additional copper creates pink and rose tones. Greenish shades of gold are produced by adding silver to gold. Perhaps the most famous use of gold alloys of different colors is Black Hills Gold. This distinctive jewelry employs the use of 10K or 12K gold alloys in shades of yellow, pink, rose, and green to make the now-famous patterns of grape clusters and leaves that were the inspiration of a Frenchman named Henri Le Beau. There is nothing quite like the special feeling you get when you wear gold jewelry. Are you exploring the possibility of adding to your treasure chest of gold?
