Tantalizing Tanzanite

Tantalizing Tanzanite

By: Jeffrey M. Bertman Graduate Gemologist Tanzanite, December’s birthstone, is notable for a number of reasons. To begin with, this beautiful gemstone exhibits a rich violet-blue color that rivals blue sapphire. This is a very desirable trait since it certainly doesn’t hurt to be compared to America’s favorite colored gemstone. In fact, Tanzanite has long served as a more affordable alternative to blue sapphire; most observers casually assume that it is sapphire, which works to the wearer’s benefit. However, Tanzanite has increasingly been recognized as a gorgeous blue gemstone in its own right. Its deep blue color with a slightly purple tint is one of the most extravagant colors known. Wearing this beautiful blue stone gives the wearer a sense of confidence. The tanzanite is named after the East African state of Tanzania, the only place in the world where it is found. The popularity of the tanzanite is due in part to its color and the exclusivity of its origin. The idea of possessing something that not everyone has, especially for someone’s December birthday, has always been one of the main criteria in the way we esteem special gems.
